How Long Does It Take to Speak Real German

How Long Does It Take to Speak Real German

It’s probably the most common question from anyone thinking about getting started: How long until I can actually have a conversation in German? The honest answer depends on what “conversation” means—and there are real numbers behind it, not just “it depends.”

What do the institutions that measure this say?

The U.S. Foreign Service Institute (FSI), which has been training diplomats in languages for decades, classifies German as Categoria II—more difficult than Spanish or French, but much easier than Russian, Arabic, or Mandarin. They estimate it takes about 750 hours of study to reach a professional working level, starting from English as a native language.

Translating that to everyday conversation level

For basic day-to-day conversation (A2/B1 level on the European framework), the number drops significantly—somewhere between 150 and 250 hours of consistent study, depending on how much exposure you’ve had to other Germanic languages or languages with a similar grammatical structure.

Übung macht den Meister.
Practice makes perfect (literally: practice makes the master).

What Affects This Number in Practice

  • Consistency matters more than intensity: 20 minutes every day yields better results than 3 hours once a week.
  • Exposure to real-life audio accelerates learning much more than just studying grammar on paper.
  • Speaking another Germanic language (English, Dutch) helps, but less than you might think—German’s grammatical structure is quite different from English’s.

The answer no one wants to hear

There’s no magic shortcut that can cram this into a few weeks. But it also doesn’t take the three years many people imagine just to “get by” in a basic conversation—with consistent study, 6 to 12 months are enough to bring most people to a comfortable level for everyday situations.
